The Internet of Things (IoT) offers unprecedented possibilities to monitor and control our everyday lives. In the present context of declining availability of natural resources and rising environmental concerns, tracking, sensing, and monitoring solutions are becoming essential to save resources and energy. These capabilities are provided by a plethora of IoT solutions not only addressing goods and processes, but also comfort, health, and security.

On the other hand, the deployment of tens of billions of connected sensors is becoming a challenge, both economically and environmentally; every sensor needs to be powered, operated, and disposed of.
